Another Seriously Stressful Habit
Last post I presented a list of seriously stressful habits. Another seriously stressful habit that I would like to offer is the practice of lying.
Dishonesty and deceit is stressful for two major reasons. The first reason is that it hurts ourselves and the second reason is it hurts others.
How does not telling the truth hurt us? I am so glad you asked. First of all, when we are dishonest, we know that it is wrong and when we do things that are wrong we do not feel good about ourselves. When we don't feel good about ourselves it causes stress through low self-esteem.
Another way deceit hurts us is, if we are liars, then we think others tend to lie as well. This causes stress because, not only do we lack faith in ourselves, we lack faith in others.
Finally, when we lie, we create situations where we have to lie more or we have to avoid certain places and people. This behavior causes stress because we become worried unnecessarily.
Low self-esteem, lack of faith in ourselves and others, having to keep our lies straight, and having to avoid certain places and people causes unnecessary worry. Worry equals stress.
Now, if we eliminate the habit of deception, we are able to feel better about ourselves, we are able to increase faith in ourselves and others, and we are able to enhance our joy for life by eliminating worry. That is what 'destressing yourself' is all about, increasing the pleasure in our lives by eliminating worry.
It is my desire to encourage you, if you have the habit of not telling the truth, to be honest with yourself and others. If you do this you create a successful practice.
Whether big or small lies, I know friends, family, and clients that are dishonest and when they lie they live their lives in very unhappy situations. I also know friends, family, and clients that are very honest with great integrity and they live their lives with joy and happiness.
Let us live our lives with joy and happiness by striving to live with honesty and integrity.
